Why can't we beat Procrastination with self-discipline?

Procrastination is something almost all of my students struggle with in some form, and one of the first things they want to try and fix.

The more we learn about procrastination, the more are seeing it’s connection to guilt, stress and low self-confidence. Those aren’t issues that can be fixed just by being stricter with time management or spending more hours at our desk.

I work with my students to build skills to beat procrastination permanently. This involves some discipline, but it also requires that students forgive themselves when they make mistakes.

The real key is to use a (very) simple system that is easy to follow and significantly reduces procrastination thereby improving results and increase the chances of achieving educational goals. The top three things I try to get my students to focus on:

1 - Do not feel too bad about messing up! Everyone struggles to focus from time to time (even tutors!)

2 - Focus on improvements every day. You would not ask someone to run a marathon before starting with a much, much shorter run

3 - Recognise that you are not being lazy. You care about results, and you want to do well. That means you have the hardest part done already. We just need to focus on concentration, time management and efficient studying to put your ideas into action.
