If you care about achieving high grades, you need to take breaks.

We all know intuitively and from experience that rest is important when you do physical exercise. You can’t expect to keep pushing yourself without time to take a break. Recovery time is also essential if you want to improve your performance at any sport.

However, we seem to forget this obvious fact when we think about resting from our academic studies. I encourage students to set aside time for “recovery” from intense learning. It can help knowledge to set it, give us energy and make us more productive when we do work. It’s also why I tell students to not worry about taking time away from studies when they have a holiday.

The best way to show this on a small scale is with the so called “pomodoro technique”. It’s one of the first tools I teach my students who don’t already know about it. You use it to break work in four 30-minute blocks, with a longer break between each 2-hour block. The technique improves productivity, helps with memorisation, and allows us to take time off from studying guilt free.
